The unexpected events of these past few months have prompted me to set down on paper the occurrences and thoughts that have assailed me since my arrival in this world of terrifying brutality.
Not knowing how I will return to the ordinary world, may fate ensure that one day these words fall into the hands of a potential reader. And let that reader not expect a rational explanation of my impromptu venture into the world of paintings, which I was in the habit of viewing with fascination . . . but instead be content to accept the veracity of the events described below.
2. Virgin Paradise
From the moment I arrived, it was evident that beauty abounded everywhere – in the leaves of each tree, in the plumes of each cloud – and I imagined that the inhabitants of these wild lands must be possessed of immense charms not to pale in comparison with or lack respect for the sublime splendour of the natural environment.
